Earning the acceptance and respect of your co-workers is really important. After all, you spend a major part of your day with them! Sharing a healthy bond with your colleagues makes work seem less stressful and more fun. It is necessary for your personal success as well as for the success of your organization.
Getting along with your colleagues is no rocket science. There are a number of things you can do in order to impress people at your workplace. Here are a few simple tips which will help make your colleagues like you.
10. Respect their privacy and space
It is good to be friendly and interactive with your colleagues. However, you need to know where to draw the line. For example, if somebody seems upset and is not in a mood for a conversation, do not be too pushy by asking “what’s wrong” again and again. If he really wants to share the problem with you, he eventually will. Make sure that you are not being too nosey and give others the space they need. Speaking too loudly, chatting while others are trying to concentrate on work, moving about the office unnecessarily are few ways in which you might be disturbing your co-workers.
Happy people are the best people and the most prominent sign of a happy person is that he always wears a bright, sunshine smile on his face. Your smile is the best way to convey that you really enjoy working with your colleagues. Smile as often as you can and let your colleagues know that you are a warm, friendly person who is open for interaction.
8. Take a sincere interest in your colleagues
Another way you can make your co-workers really like you is by taking a sincere interest in them. Be a good listener when a co-worker comes to you to speak about his problems, personal or professional. Don’t forget to wish your colleagues on their birthdays/anniversaries. Remember, every little effort you put in to get to know your co-workers counts. Make good use of the lunch and coffee breaks you get at work by interacting with your co-workers and getting to know more about them.
7. Help others
One of the most bankable ways to make your colleagues like you is to be there for them whenever they need help. As far as possible, never miss an opportunity to lend a helping hand to your co-workers. Now this does not mean that you need to put your own work on hold to assist others. Of course your own work comes first. However making a little extra effort to help someone in need will definitely help you in strengthening your bond with your colleagues.
6. Credits, compliments and appreciation
If you are impressed the way your co-worker has handled a certain project or how quickly he/she was able to complete the given work, say so. In case someone at your workplace has got a new hairstyle or outfit you really like, tell them how amazing they look. When working in a team, give credit and acknowledge those who put in extra efforts. Everyone likes to receive compliments and appreciation. Your appreciation will make your co-workers feel valued and help you strengthen your relationship with them.
5. Make sure you are approachable
Being approachable is really important in order to be liked by your co-workers. If you get through the day by concentrating only on your work with little or no interaction with others, your colleagues may think you are not interested in talking to them. There are a number of things you can do to avoid being tagged as ‘unfriendly’ and ‘unapproachable’. Take the initiative to start a conversation with your co-workers whenever you get the chance. Participate in office parties, lunches etc. Be prompt in responding to calls and emails. The more sociable and amiable you are, the more your colleagues will like to be around you.
4. Criticize constructively
In order to remain in the good books of your colleagues, you must know the art of ‘constructive criticism’. Disagreements between co-workers are very common. There might be several instances where you may not like how your colleague is handling a particular project or the way he deals with the clients. You have the right to present your views and ideas but make sure you do this without hurting his/her sentiments. Instead of expressing your strong opinions directly, try to present them in the form of suggestions and let the other person make the final call. In case you have to criticize someone do it privately instead of pointing out his mistakes in front of the entire office.
3. Quit playing the blame game
Accepting you mistakes may take a lot of courage but it is the right thing to do. If your colleagues try to show you where you went wrong, do not take it personally. Whether it is a minor error or a significant one, refrain from giving unnecessary excuses or playing the blame game. Instead try to work out ways to make up for your mistakes. This will not only save a lot of time and energy, it will also earn you the respect and appreciation of your colleagues.
2. Avoid gossiping about your colleagues
Avoid being a part of the office drama if you really want your colleagues to like you. Quit saying negative things about people behind their back. Gossiping may seem fun and entertaining but it will never help you gain the respect of those around you. Whenever a gossiper approaches you with the latest news about other employees, give a neutral response like ‘really?’ or ‘okay’ and move away. If you don’t indulge in gossiping about your co-workers they may return the favor and avoid talking about you behind your back.
1. A positive attitude
People with a positive, energetic attitude are the most likeable ones. Are you the kind of person who sees the bright side no matter how bad things get? If yes, then your co-workers are bound to respect and appreciate you. If you keep cribbing and complaining about everything your colleagues will eventually lose interest in talking to you. Make sure you keep your pessimism in check, contribute to the office atmosphere in a positive way and be the source of encouragement for those around you. A positive attitude will help you in tackling all your problems without losing that smile on your face!
One thing which you must keep in mind is that it is impossible to impress everyone. Some of your co-workers may not show any interest in strengthen their bond with you. In case the relationship between you and a particular colleague does not improve despite all your efforts, do not waste any more time thinking about it. Be good to those around you but do not try too hard to impress others. The most important thing is to remain true to you self.
