It is always surprising and mind-blowing to know amazing space facts. It has uncountable stars, galaxies and universes. As a kid, we learned many things about space and our solar system. We get to know various pieces of evidence with the help of Satellites, Astronauts on missions and scientists who are studying the space. Sometimes they are true and sometimes they become part of controversies and debates.
As space is very large and way beyond our imagination, it is difficult for a person to know everything about the space. We are listing down some unbelievable and awesome facts about space that will blow your mind.
10. The Footprints lasts for over 100 Million Years on Moon
There is no wind on the Moon as it does not have an atmosphere. Therefore, there are no chances of erosion of the surface. Also, as there is no water so the chances of washing the footprints away are eliminated. Therefore, it is more likely that, once you step on the Moon, your footprints stay there forever.
9. Space is completely silent.
First and simplest fact about space you must know is, it has no atmosphere. It means there is no medium be in touch when they are in space because radio waves can be sent and delivered without atmosphere. So, you scream in the space, nobody can hear you.
But this fact is quite contradictory as some scientist claim that the gases may be the medium for sound. However, the gases theory holds good on planets like Jupiter and Neptune. When the matter of empty space is taken into account, there is no chance of medium for sound.
8. Venus has an average surface temperature of 450° C
Though Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun, Venus is the hottest planet on the solar system. It has an average surface temperature of around 450° C. The reason behind this is no atmosphere situation on Mercury to regulate temperature. It experiences very tremendous fluctuation in surface temperature. Another interesting fact about Venus is that it rotates in the opposite direction than other planets which means that the Sun rises in the West there.
7. Two pieces of the same metal will permanently bond if they touch each other.
Now, this is one of the space facts must have blown your mind to the next level. If this would have happened on the Earth, our manufacturing industry might have saved billions of dollars. But it might have caused some issues too.
If two pieces of same metal touch each other in the space, they bond permanently. This process is known as cold welding. The atoms of two metals pieces do not think they are separate. On Earth, there are lots of thing like atmosphere, air, oxygen and water which come between those pieces.
6. Neutron stars can spin at the rate of 716 times per second.
This sounds really crazy because this seems really impossible. Neutron stars are the tiniest but the densest stars in the universe. Their radius is 10 Km and mass is a few times that of the sun. They are born from the core-collapse supernova star explosion and hence they spin very fast because of their physics.
5. Planet 55 Cancri e is made up of diamonds
The planet called 55 Cancri e which is also known as Janssen rotates around its sun called 55-star Cancri A. The planet is known as super earth as it has the radius twice that of the Earth. It is said that it has more carbon than oxygen and it is made up of graphite and diamonds.
4. Water vapour cloud which is 140 trillion times the mass of water in the Earth’s oceans is found in space.
That’s huge! Many areas on the Earth suffer water scarcity and people in that region would always want to discover such water bodies. But it is not a dream any more as a massive water vapour cloud with almost 140 trillion times the mass of water in the Earth’s oceans is found in the space. It’s just nobody knows how to reach there. It is around 10 billion light years away from the Earth. It is the largest discovery of water till the date.
3. A volcano on Mars is three times the size of Mount Everest.
We, the Earth people know that Mount Everest is the highest mountain above the sea level. But to our surprise, there is a volcano on Mars which is three times the size of Mount Everest. It is 600 km wide and 21 km high and named as Olympus Mons. According to space scientist, it is active and the tallest thing of any planet. But, the Rheasilvia central peak on the asteroid Vesta is almost 22 km high.
2. The sunset on Mars looks blue.
If you go on Mars and write poems about sunset, you won’t be able to describe the sunset as red and orange. Also, you can’t colour the sun red in your sunset paintings there because when NASA took a picture of the sunset on Mars and it appeared blue. That’s quite disappointing to know but that’s a fact.
Mars is known as the red planet of the solar system due to rust in the Martian rocks. But interestingly, this red planet shows the blue sunset.
The reason behind this is the dust in Mars’ atmosphere. Colours like yellow and red have a longer wavelength than that of blue and hence very fine particles allow the blue colour to pass in.
1. Voyager 1 is the furthest manmade object in space.
Voyager 1 and 2 were launched in 1977. The main aim behind launching these two was to visit Jupiter and Saturn. Voyager 2 settled onto Uranus and Neptune and Voyager 1 is into interstellar space. Voyager 1 is at a distance of more than the distance between the Sun and Pluto. It has messages from Earth and it also has different kinds of music. They stored various noises and pictures which represents Earth. All these messages were recorded by using electronic impulses and they can be translated into written words. If any alien finds this, they can enjoy the augmented reality of Earth.
As space is vast, the facts about it are numerous but these are the top 10 fascinating and mind-blowing facts about space. Some of you who are already into the space study must have known some of them. There are many other facts like dwarf planets, size of the sun, anti-gravity situation, characteristics of planets, why Pluto is not considered into the solar system and many more but many of you must have heard these facts already.
