All of us just absolutely adore Bollywood, don’t we? Yes our preference in genres would vary but we surely have one favorite movie or actor which we can never have enough of! From pretty dresses to splendid sets, soulful music to a few senseless lyrics, Bollywood has got it all. Quite a few of us, as children or teenagers, wanted to be a Bollywood actor. We couldn’t stop comparing ourselves with them and exclaiming “oh, the actress is as old as I am, and look how different we are in life!” Well after all, its not just good looks or talent that gets you a place in Bollywood. With lots of luck, lineage is a major factor for quite a few actors who we see in Bollywood. Here are a few of them –
10) Abhishek Bachchan
As much as some of us might regret the films he did, he surely ranks at 10 for having entered the industry on basis of his lineage and some really solid lineage at that. Not that I have to tell you, but he is the son of superstar Amitabh Bachchan. He entered the Bollywood world with JP Dutta’s movie – Refugee in 2000, starring alongside Kareena Kapoor, oh yes, another “lineage based” entrant. He has been a part of this industry for 15 years now and 50 movies later with a handful of 4 movies in the “hit” list – Yuva, Dhoom, Bunty aur Babli and Bol Bachchan. Guess what keeps him in the business still? Yes that L word. No not Luck, the other one!
9) Imran Khan
Son of Anil Pal and Nuzhat Khan, he is the nephew of Aamir Khan and Mansoor Khan. He debuted with Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na in 2008 which was a huge commercial success and gave him the Best Male Debut at 54th Filmfare Awards. He later moved on to do movies like Kidnap and Delhi Belly to break his romantic hero image. Receiving mixed responses even after 7 years of his career, he has been unable to establish himself as an actor.
8) Alia Bhatt
Beginning her full time career with Student of the Year in 2012, she is the 2nd daughter of Gujrati father Mahesh Bhatt and Kashmiri and German descent mother Soni Razdan. Alia is one of those actors who have established their name apart from their lineage. Her work in Highway and 2 States has gained critical acclaim. Apart from acting, she has her own line of clothing for women and has sung 2 songs as a playback singer in her own movies. You would also relate her with the super famous Alia Bhatt jokes on her lack of General Knowledge, but the actor put an end to most of it by starring in a short comedy video “Genius of the year” made by AIB.
7) Emraan Hashmi
Most people do not know that this serial kisser is actually Alia Bhatt’s paternal cousin. He is the son of Anwar Hashmi and nephew of Mukesh and Mahesh Bhatt. He made his debut with Footpath in 2003 and grew to earn the tag of serial kisser with his films like Murder, Zeher, Gangster etc. He has starred in various critically as well as commercially acclaimed movies and is famous for the fact that no matter how his movies do at the box office, the songs do pretty well. He recently starred in Gulshan Kumar’s solo album – “Mai rahoon ya na rahoon”.
6) Esha Deol
The elder daughter of Dharmendra and Hema Malini, Esha sets another example of how only lineage does not ensure a commercially successful acting career. She made her acting debut in Koi Mere Dil Se Poochhe in 2002 and gained commercial success in multi-starrer movies like Dhoom, Dus and No Entry. She is trained in Odissi and Bharatnatyam. Sadly, she could not do as well as her parents in Bollywood. She is currently a part of the television show Roadies X2.
Born to film director Shomu Mukherjee and actress Tanuja, Kajol Mukherjee made her debut with Bekhudi in 1992 while she was still in school. She later quit school to pursue acting as a career. She has played the lead role in various blockbusters including Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai etc. She is known in the Indian media for not subscribing to stereotypes of a Bollywood heroine and has hence been labelled as “unconventional”. She is active in philanthropic endeavors for women and children along with managerial work in Devgn Entertainment and Software Ltd. She has won many hearts with her bubbly performances and realistic acting, along with a horde of awards including the prestigious Padma Shri in 2011.
4) Rani Mukherji
A contemporary of Kajol and having starred in quite a few films together, Rani is the daughter of Ram Mukherjee and KrishnaRoy. She also is Kajol’s paternal cousin. Unlike other actors on this list, Rani never aspired to be an actor. As a a teenager she dabbled with acting by playing a supporting role in her father’s Bengali film Biyer Phool in 1996 and later accepted a leading role in Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat in 1997 on the insistence of her mother. She then began a full-time career in film and gained recognition for a supporting role in the romance Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. She has won various awards for her diverse performances.
3) Javed Akhtar
No we did not intend to write Farhan Akhtar. No, Javed Akhtar is not the first Bollywood celebrity in the Akhtar family. Jan NisarAkhtar, Javed Akhtar’s father, was a poet and lyricist. In a career spanning 4 decades, Jan Nisar wrote over 151 songs. Born in 1945, Javed formed a script writing duo with Salim Khan and formed the script writing duo Salim-Javed in 1971. Carrying his genetic talent of scriptwriting, Javed is a recipient of Padma Shri (1999), Padma Bhushan (2007), the Sahitya Akademi Award as well as thirteen Filmfare Awards. Surely one lineage addition we do not mind having!
2) Amrita Rao
Born to father Deepak Rao, she belongs to the Guru Dutt family, with her grandfather being Guru Dutt’s cousin. She made her on
screen debut in 2002 with Ab Ke Baras and gained popularity with her roles in Ishq Vishk and Vivah. She has been the girl next door for Bollywood for quite some time but has done not more than 20 movies in her career of 13 years. She has also done various Telugu films.
1) Ranbir Kapoor
How could we end this list without mentioning the Kapoor clan? Son of Rishi and Neetu Kapoor, Ranbir is a prominent member of the 4th generation of the Kapoor clan in Bollywood. With successful actors like Kareena, Karishma, as his cousins, Ranbir is one of those actors who make us thank the lineage factor for. Debuting in Saawariya in 2007, his first film failed to record any profits commercially or critically, but Ranbir stood up to all criticism with a blockbuster Bachna Ae Haseeno in 2008. He has done unconventional roles including Barfi and Rocket Singh and gained critical and commercial acclaim for most his performances. He indeed is one actor we can never see enough of!
So this was our top 10 list of Bollywood actors who entered the industry due to their lineage. We are sure you would want to be born again in one of these families but then that’s all right, all that glitters is not gold! Let us know who are your favorite actors in the comments below!
