Whenever we feel low, we think of a person with whom we can share our feelings and hug him or her tightly. The same is the case when we are happy. Just one hug gives us a sense that we are not alone and someone is always with us. When we hug someone, the posterior pituitary in our brain releases “love hormone.” The love hormone makes us feel warm and fuzzy inside due to the lowering of blood pressure. Huggins someone also shows our love to someone closer and dearer. Sometimes, it is tough to show emotions through words and in that case, hugging works best.
Besides all these reasons, some studies show that hugging someone has positive health benefits also. That is why it is recommended to embrace someone at least eight times a day. Some of the benefits of hugging are:
1. Hugging may protect you from getting cold
Cold is more dangerous than a fever. Everyone is scared of flu but what if I say that you may be protected from flu if you hug someone every day. Yeah! That’s true. A study has been conducted at Carnegie Mellon University which says that adults who hug regularly have minimal chances of being caught by the cold. The people who have good social networks and are embraced by others are less likely to show symptoms of infection while the people who lack good social backing and do not receive hugs or give hugs have signs of infection. So, it is pretty evident that hugging can have serious health benefits.
2. Hugging leads to more feelings and emotions
Hugging is directly related to the heart. Our heart feels good whenever others embrace us. A study conducted in the University of North California showed that people who hugged their mates developed a quickened heart rate of 5 beats per minute, compared to 10 beats per minute among the individuals who didn’t have any contact with their partners. Our heart has deep emotions connected with every close person in our life that is why whenever that person shows the love to us by embracing or hugging us, our heart experiences a feeling of love and affection thus, we feel good.
3. Newborn babies recognize their parents and create a family bonding by giving a lot of hugs to them
An infant does not know who is he and from whom he is receiving love. But hugging a baby helps him recognize his family. Hugging increases the level of vasopressin, a hormone that plays a role in family identification and bonding. A study says that children living in the orphanage have a lower level of vasopressin as they do not get any physical contact and most importantly, a hug. An infant recognizes the loved ones through their touch. So make sure that you clinch the child so that the baby knows you quickly and you do not end up being an alien to your child.
4. Hugging aids in lowering nervous tension
Every second person in this world is full of stress because of various reasons like family issues, professional issues or personal matters. Hugging can solve this too. Research says that embracing someone reduces the amount of cortisol, also known as a stress hormone in our body which eventually discharges pressure and stress and sends calm and serene messages to the brain and the person feels improved. Even if you think that you are in stressful situations like interviews, medical tests, examinations, weddings, and long voyages, hugging can solve this too. So, remember you have a simple solution whenever you are stressed.
5. Hugging helps to fight from fears
Whenever you see nightmares, a recent hug makes you calm and healthy which introduces you to another health benefit of hugging, i.e., hugging eases fears. Our one of the biggest fear in life is death. Hugging someone can vanish away that fear too. Cuddling a teddy bear can work this way. So, say goodbye to pills and nightmares; all you need is a tight hug. It makes you feel protected and helps you to fight your fears.
6. Hugging is vital for your survival
Despite all the benefits mentioned above, hugging is essential for survival. Studies say that people who receive no hugs or any touch from their loved ones lose interest in life and thus quit their lives. It makes them feel disheartened, and they stop doing basic things for survival, i.e., eating, laughing, playing, talking, etc.
7. Hugging relaxes muscles
Tensions get relieved from your body when you hug. Thus, resulting in the relaxation of muscles. Hugs also provides ease to physical pain because of hugs aid in increasing blood circulation into the soft tissues. So, give and receive hugs from your loved ones to relax your muscles and hence it will improve your health.
8. Hugs balance out our nervous system
Our skin has a network of small egg-shaped pressure centers. These sensors are in touch with the brain via the Vagus nerve. The conductance in the skin reveals a significant and vital change when someone holds another person closely. The effect of dampness and electricity in the skin during hugging leads to balancing the nervous system.
9. Hugging adds to compassion and understanding
In today’s age, we hug everybody we meet but a passionate and close hug has its own significance. An adoring hug helps a person in listening to what the heart is saying and thus helps in understanding the person in a better way. We all know that better understanding of a person leads to more emotions and feelings. Moreover, trust builds up between the people because of genuine embracing. That is why hugs have become important for a cheerful and blissful life.
10. Hugging becomes increasingly important with age
It is often said that, all your old parents need is just a tight hug! According to an Ohio State University study, older people become more fragile as they grow older. If they are left alone, many diseases caught them. Physical contact is very necessary for them. Old aged people sometimes feel very lonely which can have negative effects on their health. So, passionate and warm hugs can solve this out. Try to give them a hug every day and night.
A hug has the power to build up strong and trustworthy relationships. Embracing makes a person express his feelings to the person he loves. Hugging has so many health benefits which increases its relevance also. So, keep hugging. Hugging does not cost you anything. It is very essential for our body. Let others know that you love them just by hugging them with full excitement and love. Life becomes easy when we love people and also show the amount of love we do to them.
