Sitting in a corner of a classroom as an outcast is not a pleasant thought to begin with, let alone deal with the same in reality. Being labeled as the non-social element or one who doesn’t mingle with the groups of the class has a full potential to turn into a nightmare. If you till date have been skipping on the regular gossips of the class and not turning up in get togethers of the groups, then it’s time for you to rethink. You obviously would not like to be completely overlooked as nonexistent by your classmates. Afterall school life is not only about studies or even on the contrary picking up fights every now and then. You are there to have an experience of lifetime and learn some lessons. So go ahead and start socializing before it is too late. And here we have some simple ways to help you in doing the same and making your classmates like you:
Don’t Hesitate in Approaching People
You may have not interacted much with your fellow classmates till today. Be it group projects or presentations, you somehow managed to keep to yourself while the other group members exhibited their best interpersonal relationships. Whatever might have been your attitude towards your class fellows is now supposed to be a thing of the past. Come out of your cocoon and start interacting with them. It cannot be possible to emerge as a social being if you fail to be one in the very first social environment that a child is placed in, after home. As and when you start approaching people and holding conversations, you would realize how easy it had been the entire time. The difficulty simply lay in your head. Your classmates now would get a chance to know you better. This would definitely be a kick from your non-existent to a full functioning social being amongst the students around you.
Sharing is Good
Don’t be Joey from F.R.I.E.N.D.S. when it comes to sharing food. All you have to do is simply offer the one sitting next to you or for that matter anyone in your class to taste the food in your lunch. Who knows, the food in your lunch might just earn you some brownie points in front of your classmates. You may be head over heels in love with food, but it’s time to share some of that love. Apart from food, you may also offer to help someone with your notes. This simple gesture would surely be appreciated and not go unnoticed by the one whom you offer to help. Slowly and gradually your classmates would notice that you after all are a sharing and caring being.
Compliment or Appreciate
You need to change the way you have been perceived till today by your classmates. For doing so you need to change your ways and that involves being a bit sweet and considerate. This implies for girls and boys likewise. Learn to compliment or appreciate the efforts of others. You must go ahead and compliment the boy you think looks very immaculate today or the girl who has done some new hairdo. Do not cut short on your appreciations for others. This also involves no holding back of a hearty congratulations to those who top varied subjects.
Go for Gatherings
While celebrating every festive occasion with your family might have been your thing, it is time to try something new for once atleast. Attend the get togethers that your class fellows throw on festive occasions. While till today, you were merely an acquaintance to them, give them a chance to see your other side too. Let them know that you are a fun loving person and have always been one all throughout. Emerging from your comfort zone, make your other side known too. There is a good chance that this side of yours would be more appreciated and liked by your people.
Do Not Think Less of Others
Sometimes, one might not realize that s/he is being avoided for her/his overtly proud nature. What worsens the situation is being excessively proud and demeaning in perceiving others. If you have been of this sort, then you must compromise in this trait for it is doing you more harm than good. The day you start viewing others in your class as your equal, you would be openly welcomed in a group of friends. The matter doesn’t come to a rest only with a change in your perception. Your words and actions need to reflect that change too. Only then would you be accepted with an open heart.
Wishing Them on Birthdays
Maintain a little list of the birthdays of your classmates. No matter how little it may sound, but it is these little gestures that make a big difference. Be sure to wish them on their birthdays. Gestures like these do not go unnoticed.
It is not easy becoming a pathfinder or savior for those in distress but you must try to do so. Let your compassionate self come to the surface and do the best it can. You don’t need to go on a hunt to find someone with huge problems. There always is some or the other student in every class who seems to deteriorating emotionally. Having noticed their downfall, why not go and help them the best way possible. You are not expected to solve their problems but simply be by their side. Sometimes listeners are all we need.
Don’t be Grumpy and Laugh at Jokes
Putting on a grumpy face would bring you no good. This is the time to put on a little show. Laugh and laugh as much as you can. More or less, you have always taken things seriously. For a change, try something different. Take the little pranks or the jokes that you come across with a light head. Try not being too judgmental about those. This little change in you would make you more friendly as a person for your fellow classmates.
Bitching might give temporary pleasure, but it is not profitable in the long run. Not only does it hold the capacity to ruin you in future but also is not a good way to make friends. Stay put from bitching at all costs, no matter how alluring it may seem. Your motive is to make your classmates like you and not make them go further away. The more you stay put from such habits, the better it is for you to make friends amongst your classmates.
Participate in Class Activities
There are always class competitions every now and then involving debate, dance or art. Grab this as an opportunity not only to prove yourself, but to do something for your class. Put in your talent to the best possible use and participate in the events where you feel that you stand a chance of making your class win. Let your hard work and talent speak for you. Even if you fail to bag the first prize, your classmates would know that you represented them. This simple fact holds the power of altering your position amongst them. They would come to like and appreciate you for your efforts.
Be it anything, you firstly would always have to initiate. Only then would follow what you want.
