When you get home after a day at the office the first thing you want to do is relax and shake off the stresses of the day. Unfortunately, that’s sometimes easier said than done. Most people find it difficult to unwind and need to learn how to truly relax. Sometimes people get so caught up in their careers they forget how important it is to take care of themselves. The body and mind are machines and like any machine they will run down if they don’t receive the proper care, so although you can claim that your annual vacation is enough respite from a grueling career the truth is you need to slow down each and every day to promote a healthy spirit.
The problem lies in the fact that although you may want to relax, you have developed some bad habits that are holding you back. There are many ways to enjoy your evening and pamper yourself, but you have to remember to leave the worries of the workplace behind you and remember to treat your mind and body in the way that you deserve!
10. Catch some Zzz’s –
With the hectic rush of the workday behind you the desire to get into bed and never emerge can be overwhelming. However, if you have projects or chores to complete, this may not always be an option for you. It may seem like a good idea to finish everything before you hit the sack but, in truth, that is counterproductive. By working in a drowsy, less attentive state your tasks will take far longer and ultimately tire you out more. By taking a short guilt-free nap, you’ll awake refreshed and happy. So instead of agonising over the unfinished business, get into your comfiest PJ’s and take a well-deserved rest.
9. Soak the stress away –
Now this one may seem like a bit of a cliché but the fact is that after a long day hot water can be the magical solution to all your problems. Relaxing in a hot bath has been found to lower blood pressure, improve circulation and dilate blood vessels which could alleviate the pain of headaches. If this weren’t enough, the hot water will cleanse your skin and relax your muscles for the rest of your evening. If you don’t have access to a tub or prefer a more Earth-friendly habit, pop on some relaxing music, light some candles and your shower will be transformed into a restful paradise.
8. Feeding time –
The thought of cooking a meal and the subsequent washing up can be almost horrifying for people who work all day. If the day has taken a lot out of you and you just don’t feel up to it, take yourself out for a meal. If you feel uncomfortable eating alone then call in your crew and make it a fun evening out or if you need a more mellow vibe settle down with your favourite TV show and let the food come to you. Either way, you’re sure to feel relaxed and indulgent.
7. Movie night –
A good way to shake off the stress of the day is to lose yourself in another world, and what better world to disappear to than that of good ol’ motion pictures. Go old school and arrange an upbeat movie night, pick a few feel good movies and set out a feast of movie-themed snacks. The time you spend cuddled up with popcorn and your favourite film is sure you have you feeling lighter and more rested in no time.
6. Get a makeover –
This is a simple but great way to make you feel like royalty. If you have the time you can go down to your local salon and get a haircut, this will make you feel strong and confident enough to take on the world. If you don’t have the luxury of time or you would rather save the extra money it is incredibly easy to set up your own at-home spa experience. You can start by soaking your hands and feet and giving yourself a fabulous new mani-pedi, you could raid the kitchen for some DIY facials. (Be sure to check your products if you have allergies) At the end of the day, nothing could be more rejuvenating than to feel beautiful.
5. Go Green –
In the modern world, appreciation of nature has definitely been pushed to a back burner. Take a walk or a bike ride through your local park and focus more on the journey than your destination. By reacquainting yourself with the great outdoors you give yourself time for quiet reflection and meditation. On your journey, try to leave behind the stresses of the day and concentrate on calming your own mind. If you find background noises distracting select a soothing playlist to accompany you.
4. Revive an old memory –
Everyone has a treasured memory or an experience that brings a smile to their face every time they think about it and a way to improve your evening is to reawaken that memory. Sense memories can be very strong and even small things can have a profound effect on your mood. By recreating the smells, sounds or tastes that you associate with a good memory, you’ll find yourself transported to the past and reminded of your happy memory.
3. Indulge in Retail therapy –
Sometimes when your day just hasn’t gone the way you were hoping and things seem to be at an all time low there’s one way to guarantee a smile. Shopping! It’s time to go ahead and finally click ‘checkout’ on those items that you’ve been looking at for months; yes, those things you’ve have been avoiding because they weren’t a necessity. Putting aside your guilt and realising that you have worked hard to deserve this treat will make your day a bit brighter and put you in a better mood.
2. Talk it out –
If there are a hundred things clouding your mind and you’re finding it hard to unwind you could always meet up for coffee with a friend and talk about your problems. Whether it’s to moan about a tyrannical boss or lament your rocky love life being able to voice your concerns and share them with someone else will take a lot of pressure off you and hopefully allow you to see a solution. By having a friendly ear to help sort through your struggles you’ll be a lot more free and calm.
When you get home, try to switch off as many communications devices as you can. (Bonus points if you can bear to part with your smartphone) This may sound impossible considering the world we live in, but it’s the fastest way to ease your mind and start the relaxation process. By cutting yourself off from your work, you have a noticeable reminder that this is your time to chill and work doesn’t get to be a part of your down time. So when you return to the daily grind the next morning, you’ll be able to tackle your tasks in a clear and rested frame of mind.
