Marvel Comics has been around for decades and in this time they created a multiverse so exotic and full of life that they made themselves a beloved part of history. They are read by adults and children alike and even today their fanbase continues to grow. With their movies they inducted a new generation into the Marvel multiverse making characters like Captain America and Iron Man household heroes. In this list we see some names that while less well known are BIG on power. These characters possess mutant, supernatural and cosmic powers that would dwarf those of our silver screen heroes. Most comic book characters could pose a threat to a city or at most a country, these big bads could take out entire star systems in one go, it’s lucky most of them consider Earth too trivial to eradicate!
Even people that aren’t comic book lovers are familiar with the big, green guy a.k.a The Hulk. In an alternate reality Skaar is the son of The Hulk and Caiera, an extraterrestrial who possessed the ‘Old Power’. Caiera had the ability to make her body as durable as stone and could draw strength from the planet, Sakaar. Skaar was raised by savages on the charred waste of Sakaar and faced innumerable difficulties. The combination of his parents’ powers made him a near indestructible force. He survived falls from outer space, blasts from the cosmic power and he sent the Juggernaut reeling into space with just one punch. He was also blessed with extraordinary healing powers, superior even to his father and the Adamantium coated Wolverine. All this coupled with his resentful rage made Skaar a powerful and dangerous enemy. You definitely would not like Skaar when he’s angry.
Although not related to Mr. Spock of the Starship Enterprise, this Vulcan does have some pretty noteworthy connections. His real name is Gabriel Summers and he is the brother of Scott and Alex Summers, better known in the Marvel-verse as Cyclops and Havok. Vulcan shared similar powers to Cyclops, having the psionic ability to control energy although unlike his brothers he was an Omega level mutant. Not only could he control all forms of energy but he could also absorb the power to others. With his abilities he defeated many adversaries and at one point became the Emperor of the Shi’ar Empire until he was overthrown.
Galactus is in a whole new class of super powerful Marvel beings. He’s the last remnant of the world BEFORE the Big Bang. He first appeared in The Fantastic Four comics and was described as perhaps the most feared being in the Universe. His powers are said to stretch far beyond human comprehension, he can manipulate energy, levitate; restructure molecules; convert matter into energy and vice-versa, he can teleport people and objects across space and time, create force fields, heal other beings and many others feats that are beyond human science. Considering he has all these skills at his fingertips and stands at over 28 feet tall it’s no wonder he became the villain known as ‘The Destroyer of Worlds’.
One of the first galaxies created after the formation of the current universe belonged to a race that became known as ‘The Elders of the Universe’. The Elders possess a cosmic life force that makes them virtually immortal but the Grandmaster himself can never be killed as Death himself banished him from the land of the dead. The Grandmaster uses his phenomenal psionic powers to manipulate time, space and matter on fundamental levels, he is also one of the few beings that can heal any affliction to the point that he can bring people back from the dead. He is very fond of games and spends most of his immortal life devising complex challenges for his opponents.
The Magus was the source of the Technarchy, a race of aggressive metamorphic beings that were part human and part machine. The race travels the universe in search of planets to feed on using their techno-organic virus. Magus himself possesses the power to become absolutely anything in creation. He can change his size, shape, colour and substance which means his capabilities are limitless. In addition to this, he is telepathic giving him the ability to source information in seconds.
Among the Japanese Shinto gods Mikaboshi was once considered the God of evil, chaos and the stars. However it was finally revealed that he was a form of the cosmic abstract Oblivion and a representation of the void between worlds. His ultimate goal was the complete destruction of the Norse pantheon of gods. He also had many run ins with the Greek gods and demi-gods, defeating Zeus the father of the gods on two separate occasions. His powers include, but are not limited to immortality, energy manipulation, shape shifting, super strength and many others that make him a threat not only to the human race but all the gods of the Marvel multiverse
Cyttorak is one of the few deities in the Marvel Universe who specialises in magical abilities. He was once worshipped on Earth as a God before being banished to a dimension known as the Crimson Cosmos. He is a major source of energy to all the magical beings on Earth, he is the root of power or he mutant Juggernaut (X-Men) and his name is used by elite magicians like Dr. Strange to invoke spells. His magic gives him control over most forms of energy manipulation and he once successfully imprisoned Galactus who was helpless against his might
5. Franklin Richards
As the son of Sue Storm (The Invisible Woman) and Reed Richards (Mr Fantastic) two high powered members of The Fantastic Four, it’s no wonder Franklin Richards turned out to be a mutant of unparalleled skill. He began exhibiting telekinetic powers in-utero and his abilities only grew from there. Franklin’s most astonishing power is that he is capable of altering reality, thus ensuring any event to occur at his will. As another of the highly rare Omega level mutants his powers were far stronger than he could control as a child. He suffered many trials in his endeavours to harness his strength and protect the world.
4. Phoenix Force
The Phoenix Force is not an independent entity but an immortal and primal life force of the Universe. It was created in the void between states of being and is the source of all psionic force throughout the Omniverse at all points in time. It wields the power to create or destroy any part of the universe at will. As it is a cosmic energy The Phoenix requires a host in order to interact with the mortal world, his most recognisable identity was that of Jean Grey (X-Men). Later, he also possessed the body of her daughter Rachel Grey (Marvel Girl) who was powerful mutant in her own right. Together Phoenix Force and Rachel Grey defeated the behemoth Galactus.
3. Living Tribunal
At the conception of the Universe, Living Tribunal was created, it is a cosmic deity that had authority over most of the other conceptual beings of great power such as Eternity, Infinity, Oblivion and Death. Living Tribunal stands second only to One-Above-All in the hierarchy of Marvel idols. Both Omniscient and Omnipotent, possessing almost limitless power Living Tribunal has the power to observe, destroy or isolate any planets, suns or area of the universe that it chooses. Its most common manifestation is a three headed being. Each face represents a facet of its personality one for equity, one for necessity and one for revenge.
Originally part of an ancient otherworldly race from a place called the Beyond-realm that exists outside the multiverse and is described as being infinitely more complex. He was vastly strong and near omnipotent. He has been known to defeat the likes of the Marvel abstracts (i.e. Eternity, Infinity, Oblivion and Death) as well as supreme cosmic being such as Galactus and Living Tribunal. He observed humans from a distance and later came to Earth in order to understand the origin and meaning of desire. He could never fully determine an answer and this made him erratic and dangerous to the universe until he was finally killed by Molecule Man.
One Above All
As the name suggests this being is rumoured to be the creator of all life that exists in the multiverse and possibly beyond. Naturally as the creator of life in the Marvel world, One Above All is omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent. With abilities greater than any human mind can fathom and an immortal life this character can easily be considered the most powerful Marvel being. In fact there is a popular fan theory that One Above All is actually a representation of Marvel comic creator, Stan Lee and that all is cameos in the Marvel movies show that this mighty god is still watching over his universe.
